So, its been three years now since we moved to Berlin.
What are the most significant things that I noticed about this city during that time?
There is so many, it would probably fill up a whole book to write them all down. But let me point out three main points:
a) This city is always changing.
If you look at how the the city presented itself three years ago and how it looks now you notice a lof of new buildings and plazas. Many new museums opened up, shop owners changed and empty spaces filled up.
And Berlin is never complete, construction zones are a basic element of the city.
b) This city is bankrupt.
If you wouldn’t read the newspaper about the large deficits and high debt interests the city has to pay you would actually see it when looking at the bad condition of a lot of streets, at the cancellation of subsidies for a lot of public facilities etc etc.
And they save money even where they shouldn’t. Rising numbers of tourists show that there is a big market where you - when investing for instance in cultural institutions - can even gain more money.
c) This city has a big diversity.
No matter what you want to do, there is always something going on that fits your interest. You wanna watch professional sport? There is so many first division clubs, you pick out the kind of sport you wanna visit and you’ll find something adequate. You are into arts or cultural events? Well, no matter if its exhibitions, readings, movies or concerts, there is most certainly something interesting for you happening whenever you want to go out.
So, taking it all into account Berlin is an interesting and fascinating city which needs money ![]()
