Best food and drinks in Berlin

Looking back there were a lot of posts in my blog about restaurants and cafés in the recent past. So, time to sit down and write a short little list of the best food and drink places in Berlin that I visited so far. This list is purely biased of course, created by a vegetarian and subject to change from time to time as soon as I find an even better place in a category:

Best vegetarian restaurant: Samadhi

Best juices: Eve & Adams

Best noodles: Spreegold (Hufelandstr. 20, 10407 Berlin)

Best american pizza: Fatass Pizza

Best italian pizza: Pizza Nostra (Lychener Str. 2 – 4, 10437 Berlin)

Best burritos: Dolores

About the list of non-smoking places

There are still a lot of people visiting the page including a list of non-smoking places when searching for smokefree restaurants and pubs in Berlin. As of Jan 08 a non-smoking ban made a lot of public place smokefree but parts of it were declared invalid by the “Supreme Court” of Germany a while later. This happened because the judges ruled that it is unfair if bigger pubs are able to create separate smoking rooms while smaller pubs do not have the space for that. The Berlin senate is working at a new version of the non-smoking ban.

So, how is the current situation? The simple rule is like this: If it looks like a restaurant or cafè, profits in big parts from offering food then in almost all the cases it is smokefree, if it looks like a pub or bar basing their profits on drinks then it is not smokefree. The new law being worked on at the moment will have some paragraphs telling pubs that are offering food to not allow smoking but due to the fact that there are only a few people running around in the city being employed for controlling restaurants and pubs the chances, that they’ll find the black sheeps are very small. Summarizing what is happening you could say: If you wanna eat or drink a coffee smokefree – no problem, if you just wanna have a drink or beer in a smokefree pub – forget it, stay at the restaurant and drink there.

Before the non-smoking ban this page was visited very often for its list of non-smoking restaurants/cafes/bars and at least for the restaurants it is not necessary anymore, for the pubs it would contain no entry so far because at least I don’t know of any pub that is smokefree in this city.

the impossible becomes reality – a smokefree bar in Berlin

When I visited the Cupcake Bakery in Prenzlauer Berg and mentioned that I am always searching for smokefree places in Berlin, a friendly worker there told me about a smokefree bar called “Erdbeer-Bar”.

Say what? “Smokefree” and “bar” – I never heard these words in combination here in Berlin although I heard about a smokefree pub in Weißensee. So I had to check for myself if that was true. Upon arrival at the Erdbeer-Bar which is situated near the Volksbühne at the corner of Max-Beer-Str. and Linienstr. I saw a man standing outside lighting up his cigarette. Actually a good sign cause somehow it told me that he did this here and not inside for a reason. And indeed, entering the bar there were a lot of people enjoying the music played by a live DJ and drinking their cocktails but nobody smoked. While the worn down furniture was something I had to get used to I really liked the big variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as well as the size of the cocktails that you can get there. Not forgetting the fact that this bar is open until the early morning. So,if you want to sit somewhere smokefree late at night, this place is definetely recommendable.
