closed shops

It is sunday and that is the perfect day to write some words about the “Ladenschlussgesetz” – the “you have to have your shop closed at certain times law” – one of the oddest things about Germany. While it forbids to have your shop open after 8 pm on working days – which is stupid – it forbids to have your shop open at all on sundays – which is also stupid.

no holiday

Gladly, the state of Berlin has not so many holidays as many other states in Germany. So on All Saints Day everything is open, people go to work. And obviously Berlin profits from the fact that other states have a holiday, lots of tourists in the city who came over for a longer weekend and enjoy the city’s sights. In my former hometown on such regional holidays I used to visit the neigbouring city situated in a different state or went over the border to the Netherlands. Now I am in a city that is being visited. How things change ;)
